Self-deprecation is worth its weight in smoldering phoenix-ashes and baby unicorn tears.

I know, I know, these articles never get me any replies, and I don't think anyone has the twisted sense of humor I know and love so well. But this video is just huggin' brilliant . Just make the damn pancake already.

So I sat up on campus, logging into my Yahoo! Mail account, and the inbox was full of MySpace friend requests. Now, this isn’t an odd occurrence, because a)I’m absolutely gorgeous and everyone loves me, and b)my band kicks some serious backside. But I deleted them all, and decided to go to MySpace to see what I could see. Logging in (and feeling sheepish doing so in a public place – MySpace is, after all, tawdry), I saw the faces of ten people I didn’t know, wanting to be my “frien...

I don’t know why people don’t think of me as metal. But they really don’t. There are so many times that people meet me, even get to know me a little bit, and still think that I’m a “classical music all the time” kind of kid. I still remember working at a local taco joint five or six years ago, and one day it was my turn to pick the radio station as we opened up the store in the morning. I turned the radio to the closest thing I could get to metal in Utah. The manager’s jaw dropped....

The Galilean Satellites By: Rosetta Year: 2005 Click here for the artists site Few albums are as all-encompassing as Rosetta's latest release, The Galilean Satellites . Usually, an album by a band, even in the case of incredible releases, is just that – an album, a record to listen to at will. The Galilean Satellites isn't an album, or record – it's an event. One that you should seriously pencil time in your schedule for. On first inspection, and whi...

There’s been a lot of talk on JU in the past months about “bullshit bank charges” (most recently with Locamama’s article here ) and the like. While I understand the angst that certain members of the community feel towards their financial institutions, I feel a desire – nay, a need – to defend bank practices and why they charge you the way they do. The first and most important thing to remember about a bank, credit union, or any other financial institution is this – they are a BUSINESS, a...

Blood Inside By: Ulver Year: 2005 Click here for the artists site Few bands have changed as much or as consistently as Ulver. Norway’s wierdnoid black-metal-cum-folk-metal-cum-ambient-cum-electronic group has never been content to duplicate a sound. This is a band that created one of the most raw, poorly-produced and vivid black metal albums, Nattens Madrigal , the group that produced one of the strangest spoken-word poetry ambient albums, Themes from William Blake’s Mar...

Yesterday I had to get a haircut. (Basically, my boss/father told me that I get a haircut this week or I look for a new job next week . . . not a tough decision. ) As I sat in the chair in the salon and the cosmetologist molested my head for half an hour, the Rachel Ray show was on. (Yes, I know, she's my sworn nemesis, but what was I gonna do? I gotta keep tabs on the enemy, after all . . .) She had one Kate Hanni on her show, who was trapped on an airplane for 9 1/2 hours without b...

I don't know how many of you are familiar with the consummate webcomic Toothpaste for Dinner . Those of you who have been victim to my spamming of your threads with ugly (but hilarious) drawings, they're usually from him (or his wife, the incomparable Natalie Dee ). But they've both taken to posting new videoblogs on YouTube, singlehandedly justifying the existence of that otherwise superfluous site. But by far the funniest ones that Drew has made are his "Dr. Synthesizer" bits, whe...

I'm sitting here in my teller station at work and I'm having the strangest feeling I've ever had I think that I'm having a PANIC ATTACK because even though we're not busy and actually things are quite calm I feel like there's something wrong inside of me and that I'm going to EXPLODE or HAVE A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN and I think that I'm losing my mind and that scares the ever loving dogmeat out of me and I don't know how to make it go away and I can't tell my coworkers something's wrong and I can'...

I sat reading SHE's article once again this morning, (you can read it here ) and I thought of another question that would be a good one. I was going to write it on her article, but then I thought, "I'd like to see what people say about it." So my question is this . . . what's your "guilty pleasure" TV show? I know you've got to have one. Some soap opera like "Passions"? Some reality show like "Top Model"? Some silly crime show like "CSI" or one of its myriad clones? Fess up, it'...

It's been a long time since I've posted a "snapshot of the moment", as I've been wont to do ( here , here , and here ). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The pine needles prick my spine as I lean back, looking up into the sky, watching the drifts of snowy clouds saunter through the blue readiness. Anticipation builds up inside me, slowly coming to a climax, abating, calming, flowing assuredly to the...

What is the allure of the “big” check? Why do they always have the facsimile check when someone wins a big prize for something? It just reminds me of Happy Gilmore, how he would keep them all in his car's back seat and then took them all to the bank at once to cash them in, tucked under one arm. They're silly looking and cliché. Metal isn't supposed to soothe. Why does Katatonia's music, then, soothe me so much? Strange how a restrained, painful voice can make what would otherwise be ...

There's been a lot of talk lately in my state about he children born to illegal immigrants here in the US. Specifically, people have been asking what should be done about these now-citizen children. So, JU, here's my question. I'm not sure how I feel about the whole thing, and I'd like to see some active debate about it. What do you do with these infant citizens? Do we stop making them citizens to discourage illegal immigration? If we take away instant citizenship at birth, what, th...
