or; what do we do?

There's been a lot of talk lately in my state about he children born to illegal immigrants here in the US. Specifically, people have been asking what should be done about these now-citizen children.

So, JU, here's my question. I'm not sure how I feel about the whole thing, and I'd like to see some active debate about it.

What do you do with these infant citizens? Do we stop making them citizens to discourage illegal immigration? If we take away instant citizenship at birth, what, then, are the necessary requirements for citizenship? Do we create a double standard for people based on their parents?

What do you think, JU?

It is not as simple as "stop making them citizens" as it would require a constitutional amendment.  And I dont see that happening.  Not without a catalyst that galvanizes the country.

I agree with you - but still - what do you do? You can't deport your own citizens, but if you deport all the parents of these newborn citizens, then they get raised by the state, creating more tax burden.

Of course I don't want to take citizenship away from anyone. I just want to see what some of you think about it.

You can't deport your own citizens,

But you are not deporting the citizens, but the non-citizens. And unless there is a compelling need, the government should not be taking children away from parents. So the parent retains control of the child. When the child gets older, they are still a citizen of the country (unless they renounce it), and are free to return and enjoy the benefits of that citizenship.

It's not fair and for them to even think such a thing is ridiculous!

OK, here's the scenario:

1. We can't refuse citizenship to the children born here without amending the Constitution. So that option is out.

2. We should never remove children from their parents against their will when there is no finding of criminal abuse/neglect. So that option, in my opinion, is also out.

3. We should not automatically grant residency/citizenship status to an illegal who managed to cross the border to give birth.

So what to do? I believe we deport the parents with the child. The child retains citizenship status and can come back when they are an adult or when the parent has legally entered the country. We should not reward illegals for breaking the law, regardless.

It sounds cruel, yes, but the option of separating the parent from the child is, in my opinion, FAR more cruel. The parent is a criminal and needs to face the consequences of their crime. We don't grant special consideration to burglars because they have children, we shouldn't grant special consideration to illegals either.
