Self-deprecation is worth its weight in smoldering phoenix-ashes and baby unicorn tears.

DISCLAIMER: This is being posted on JoeUser.com, but, as with many of the Stardock sites, I'm sure it'll show up in other forums, too. So whatever. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I hate Luna. I just hate Luna. It's why I've used ObjectDock for so long. But, being a cheapskate, I haven't yet coughed up the dinero to by Object Desktop in its entirety. (Don't worry, Brad, I'm going to....

So. I was reading a collection of Far Side comics to take my mind off my pressing need to do some homework, and I stumbled across one that was just hilarious. Ernie is sitting in his armchair, reading the morning paper, and his phone rings. It's God, trying to call 555-5447. But Ernie's number is 555-5547 or something really close to it. So God hangs up. Top that off with the wondrous caption, "From that day forward, Ernie told everyone he had talked with God." And it got me to thi...

Yeah, mostly I'm not actually leaving. I just love when people post those "Goodbye, JU" articles. They're funny. They're especially funny because they inevitably come back. I'm just waiting on you, Bakerstreet. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ School starts this week. Already I've got too much homework to really be blogging right now. I've got 30 pages to go in Don Quijote, and still have an essay to write b...

The Westboro Baptist "Church" strikes again! It seems as though these virulent, godless inbred retards have sent a fax to the Deseret Morning News regarding the mine collapse here in the state. It begins with the words, "Thank God for Utah mine disaster." It continues to read that they're going to picket in Utah, with huge banners reading "God Hates Fags!" If (but at this point, it's becoming more and more likely when) they have funerals for any dead miners, they've pledged to be here...

In many recent conversations with members of the illiterate horde that makes up the vast majority of my generation, I've encountered some interesting feedback. Many people, upon hearing my intent to receive a Ph.D. in Spanish Literature to be able to teach at the University level, seem taken aback. Often, it's at best maligned, at worst ridiculed. This has caused me a little bit of consternation the last few weeks. It's been called "worthless" by more than a couple of people. And, yo...

So . . . according to The Guardian , approximately 190,000 American-issued weapons have gone missing. From the story: The weapons include AK-47 machine guns, pistols, body armour and helmets, some of which will have ended up in the hands of insurgents. The report, by the Government Accounting Office, which sent its report to Congress last week, found an alarming 30% gap between the number of weapons issued to Iraqi forces and records held by US forces in Iraq. The 20-page report...

Ever since discovering the poetry form pantoum , I've been trying and trying and trying to make one work. It's a difficult style of very structured poetry, but it's got a great "incantation" sound to it. (For those who would like more info on the pantoum , check out some explanatory sites here , or a more in-depth explanation of structure, rhyme scheme, and line repitition, check this site out .) But yesterday, the fates smiled, the clouds opened, and I was able to create what I think ...

Back from Hawai'i. What a miserable thing, coming back to civilization after more than a week of pleasurable playtime, a whole nine days of not having to think about work, the looming school semester . . . ANYTHING AT ALL. A week to enjoy a totally new and unexplored (for me at least) place, a tropical paradise filled with green valleys, majestic mountains, painfully clear blue waters, and plenty to see, hear, eat, try, and experience. And now we present . . . the drudgery. Welcome ...

(This is going to sound like an unfriendly rant if you don't read the article here first. And yeah, it's not going to be very friendly, but oh well.) So my little sister just walked in, and I told her, "Hey! I've just been branded non-Christian and been told to have fun in Hell!" She looked at me, eyes wide and incredulous, and said, "Umm . . . why?" I answered, "Because I didn't find it offensive that they opened the senate with a prayer by a Hindu cleric the other day!" Her ...

(Please excuse my lack of lucidity, I'm quite ill and drugged up the wazoo and still I'm stuck at work. Yay.) With much interest I've read the conversation occuring on KFC's thread here , specifically concerning the Hindu prayer offered in the United States Senate floor. For those of you who haven't seen exactly how it went down, I'm giving you YouTube goodness (or badness?) here. Watch it. I know that I've already asked the question "Does God or country come first...

So I'm sitting here at work, and my phone buzzes, "Message for you, sir!" (Yeah, it's from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, when the guy gets shot in the chest with the arrow.) I pick it up. It's from this girl. A girl that's, sure, my friend, but it's not like I see her (or that I want to see her) as anything else. She's nice, but I'm just not into her like that. I like girls a little more . . . erudite? . . . than that. But so it says, "I'm free!" I answer, "From what?" "...

Now, I'll be the first one to congratulate Dateline's "To Catch a Predator" series and what they've done to incarcerate (see, Col., that's how you use that word) evil, vile men. I'm glad they do what they do, and I'm grateful for the group that they work with to bring those bastards to justice. However, I'm not above making fun of things or finding ridicule. So, without further ado, a very funny parody of those "To Catch a Predator" things, with a dog as the perp. Man, got...
