or; a real horror-fest

I don't know how familiar any of you are with the political spectrum (or lack or spectrum) in the "great" state of Utah, so I'll enlighten prior to my diatribe . . .

Utah is a very - probably the most - Republican state in the union. With the exception of the second district, all of our elected officials are Republicans. (And the Democrat in the second district, Jim Matheson, is as conservative as Democrats can be . . .) We have two Republican senators, and two Republican congressmen. As I've mentioned, with the exception of the second district it's very, very Republican. I mean, this is the state where approval ratings for Dubya are still in the seventies . . .

The same can be said of the State Legislature. It's overwhelmingly Republican. But it's also overwhelmingly conceited, egotistical, and full of themselves. Many of the Republican "leaders" in the State government refuse to even listen to what few Democrats may be there. They will purposely be as loud as possible when any of the Demos or that one lone Independent have the floor.

Few things annoy me more than people who won't even have common courtesy with others. Consequently, while voting tomorrow, I'm not going to be spending much time looking at the (R) or (D) next to the candidate's names - I'm going to be looking for the (I) for incumbent . . . and heartily voting against them.

Every one of 'em. Rob Bishop, my congressman . . . I'll gladly vote against him. His opponent, Steve Olsen, is a fine, upstanding man with good values. Bishop is a scumbag.

Orrin Hatch . . . I've already expressed on this site my distaste for our senior (citizen) congressman. His biggest plank when he first ran was that his opponent had been in Washington for 18 years - much too long. He's running for his sixth (count 'em SIXTH) term. Yup, that's thirty years in Washington. I'll proudly vote against him. (That, and he's become the Borg of the Republican party - he has no views of his own anymore, just parrots the party lines . . . you can almost see him downloading the answers from the Borg central computer as he debates.) Pete Ashdown, Democrat, is getting my vote.

Will my votes be in vain? Most assuredly. Will I be flushing them down the toilet? Yup. But at least I can say I voted. I've cleared my conscience. I can proudly say, "hey everyone, it's not my fault - I didn't vote for these tools."

So I'll go and vote tomorrow with a sad heart and a clear soul. Oh well. Whatever.

I have noticed a tendency on your part to hold back how you really feel in the political arena.  You need to let it all out, and really say what you feel.  Dont pussy foot around with niceties.  Just say it with feeling!

Before I moved, I felt the same way about my rep (yea, on the other side of the spectrum).  When I looked for a new place, I made sure I was not in his district.  As bad as yours are, that one is worse.  Not as bad as the worst of them (Shirley Jackson Lee for example), but a total waste of space in the capitol.

Cheer up!  Maybe your lone Democrat will get a committee chair next year.

I hope that he does. He really is a good Democrat, and represents Utah's values better than any of the Republicans do . . .

I just wish that Steve Olsen would get elected. He would represent us much better than that lying, theiving dolt Bishop. Arrgh.

Arrrgg!  There ye go!  Now that is good!  Perhaps tomorrow I will join you in a tirade.

The vote will see.  But I do agree that safe districts (which about 400 of the seats in the house are) are rife with abuse!  I hate gerrymandering.  But that seems to be the politics of the day.

Yup. Sad but true. Oh well. Some day we'll see a change . . . *sappy music starts to play*

The sun will come out tomorrow!  Tomorrow!  The sun will come out!

Bless you for your optimism.  Forgive me for my sarcasm.  I hope you are right!

I only feign optimism to disguise the fear I'm barely keeping inside . . .

At least Democrats RUN in Utah...they don't even mount a challenge in North Texas.

While Utah may be the most Republican state, I'll wager our REGION trumps you any day of the week. Sadly, few of our Republicans are small government Republicans.

I don't agree with this attitude. First, if you vote your conscience or in alignment with your beliefs (more on that later), it's not 'in vain', IMHO. Secondly, such an attitude seems to suggest that voting for anyone but the winner is a waste of time.

As for 'looking for the (I)', if you really feel the non-incumbent is the best choice, that is one thing. Voting against the incumbent for no other reason than because he is the incumbent gives the impression that being for someone because of their views, beliefs, etc. takes a back seat to punishing someone with no thought for what their replacement may be; better or worse.

Seems a haphazard way, at best, to elect the officials that decide how the country, state, or local municipality is to be run.

I have carefully weighed the options, and the candidates. It just happens to be that all of the incumbents in my entire state, IMHMFO, are all asswipes. Thus, I will vote against them all.

I made this article seem as if my biggest priority was voting against them. It's not. I'd rather have Steve Olsen over Rob Bishop any day, and the same can be said for Pete Ashdown and Orrin Hatch. I know, in our State's case, that the non-incumbent is the best choice. Too bad no-one else sees it.

And as far as my vote being in vain, at least I'm still voting. Obviously I don't consider it a waste of time or I wouldn't do it. But it is a flushed vote here.

Good for you!

Would that all voters do the same. I fear many will only do as I stated before. Ironically, they will probably be the people complaining in a couple of years about the morons that got voted into office.

These days having said 1 makes saying 2 "no need to mention."

True enough, but I wanted to make sure everyone was on the same playing field with me.

Hey there, long time no see. I'm thinking about starting ju up again....I miss you guys! We'll see if that actually happens.

But look what happens in Utah when they do elect a Liberal Democrat... Rocky Anderson?

The big joke is though, no matter how Republican the state of Utah is, the Republicans in the State Legislature seem to act more like Democrats. Most of the people I know who move there from democrat states notice it almost immediately. lol

Oh, and I agree with you on Orrin Hatch... the worst part about him is how different he is in Washington and Utah. You'd think a guy his age would have figured out who he is.

He's a chameleon, spouting the party line and pretending to care about Utah. He just likes to be in charge.

AMANDA! It's great to see you! I've missed ya, hon, oh how I've missed ya . . . I had to go and make friends with whip in your absence. Oh well. I'd love to have you both!
