Self-deprecation is worth its weight in smoldering phoenix-ashes and baby unicorn tears.
or; bored while chatting . . . enter TV.

Yesterday, as I sat down to do a chat for my online spanish course, I realized that it would be infinitely easy to watch TV while I do it. So I sat down about seven pm with my computer on my lap, and flicked on the boob tube. I channel surfed for a second, eventually ending up on the local ABC affiliate. I was starting at America Ferrera, with a faceful of braces and a painfully garish outfit, and realized I'd stumbled onto a gem.

It was the series premiere of “Ugly Betty”, an american interpretation of a colombian telenovela. It's the story of Betty Suarez, a recent college graduate who wants to work in magazines. Of course, for her garish looks and lack of obvious beauty, she's turned down. But she's seen by the president of the company, who hires her to be the assisstant for his womanizing lecherous son.

And hillarity ensues.

I loved this show, and I fell in love with Betty almost instantly – she is one of the sweetest characters you will ever see on TV. I can see the sweet heart of this program, and it fills me with joy – this really is a splendid show.

Now, I do have a bit of background with this show – I used to watch the telenovela, “Yo soy Betty la fea” rather regularly. It was very different from a lot of other novelas. While most are filled with sleazy guys, slutty girls, and lots of sex, “Betty la fea” had all that – plus the character of Betty, who was so sweet and caring that you couldn't help but love her. As the show progressed, Betty's inner beauty came out and she became amazingly beautiful by the end of the show.

I'm not sure if that's what they're going to do with “Ugly Betty”, but I can see a lot of potential for this show. Vanessa Williams, as the opposing editor, is absolutely splendid. She oozes evil. The son is a superb womanizer, but he seems to have a decent heart deep down.

But at any rate, I encourage y'all to get out there and watch this show. It was a real treat. Get on it, next Thursday!

Tell them I sent you.

Check it out. I haven't seen either of those movies (they seemed a little "chick-flick" for me, and my ex didn't make me see 'em), but she was splendid as Betty. I love it!

I loved this too. I wish it was on a little later because I do miss bits since it's at the same time I'm trying to get my boys in bed. There are just constant interuptions. Someday I will get a tivo so I can catch every bit of my favorite shows.

I liked it. I was a little distracted (playing WoW as a healer in a group can do that to ya) but I loved it. It's definitely going to be staying on the TiVo list.

I'm glad to hear someone besides me watched it . . . I'd hate for another great show to get cancelled because of poor ratings. Hope those with Neilsen ratings boxes were tuning in!

You should rent the other two movies she's in Breden, shes' a great actress! My daughter said she's tired of seeing her play ugly girl roles. I said to her that those are the best ones becuase they are not easy to play.

I'll have to pick them up some time . . . when I'm with a group of girls, though. Can't go into those territories alone . . .

My question exactly! So what if she's not the glamorous fashion god? She's got more heart than everyone else in the building combined.

Hmm.  The previews looked awful, but maybe I will have to check it out.  Truth be told, I have zero desire to watch any TV these days.  Can't think of the last time I actually "watched" (set time aside to watch a show) something since the series finale of Alias.

I'm the same way - I don't put aside time to watch anything. This is the first time I've sat down to actually watch a TV show with intent to view it since I got home from the mission.

It's very telenovela in many ways, but it's absolutely fun. Check it out.
